Longmont Distinguished Citizen 2018: Dan Gust

Dan Gust and his wife, Karen were born and raised in South Dakota. They met in college, got married shortly after graduation and will celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary this June.  They have one daughter, Kirsten, who now owns and operates the family business, and a son Jason who lives in Longmont.  The Gust Family has lived in Longmont since 1984.

Dan holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering for South Dakota State University and a Master of Business Administration degree from Texas Tech University. After graduating from SDSU, Dan worked in various engineering, management and executive positions for Winnebago Industries, Texas Instruments and MiniScribe Corporation.

Dan and Karen started their family business, Gust Family Enterprises, with the purchase of their first hardware store on North Main in Longmont in 1990. In mid-1991 the Gusts bought Hometown Hardware on Coffman Street in Longmont and both stores were converted to Ace Hardware.  Those stores were ultimately combined into a large store on North Main in 2001.  In 1999 the Gust family bought Johnstown Ace Hardware, a small rural store in downtown Johnstown.  They operated that store until it was sold to a new Ace Retailer in 2005.  In January 2017 the final ownership transfer to the company was made to Dan and Karen’s daughter Kirsten.  The Gusts own and manage residential rental and commercial property and continue to be active in the family business.

From 1997 until 2007 Dan served as a Director and Board Member of Ace Hardware Corporation serving at various times as Chair of the Retail, Nominating & Governance, and Finance Committees. He has been active in the Longmont community serving on many boards and committees including: Longmont United Hospital board member and board chair: Longmont Area Chamber of Commerce board member and board chair; Longmont YMCA board member; Longmont Economic Development Partnership board member and board secretary along with many other organizations.  In 2011 Dan Gust was inducted into the Boulder County Business Hall of Fame.

Dan is an active member of Rotary International. As well as being President of the Longmont Rotary Dan served many years as a Board member and President of the Longmont Charity Fund, one of the club’s vehicles to finance worthy causes in the local area.  He is currently a member of the club’s Foundation Committee.
